The Donut Shop Cafe was opened in 1988 by my parents, Steve and Cindy Scott. They had previously owned both IHOPs on I-55 and Ellis Avenue. With small children at home, the 24 hour restaurant business was, in my father's words, "A heart attack machine." They wanted something that would allow them to get out of the franchise business and slow down some. They sold the heart attack machines and opened a donut shop on McDowell Road in Jackson, MS. It was such a success, that they opened a second store on Terry Road and, finally, our current location in Richland, MS. Eventually, they closed the doors on the McDowell and Terry Rd. stores.
Our family is so fortunate to be a part of this community! My brother and I attended Richland schools and both worked many long hours at the cafe throughout our teen years. My parents were on the PTA board each year and front and center with any fund raising events... even going so far as to catch the catfish for the Fish Fry that afforded the Middle School a playground!
But that was then. What is The Donut Shop Cafe all about now? We've painted our roof bright red, done some remodeling on the inside, filled the dining room with art from a very talented Richland artist... oh yeah, and our waitresses are sassier and friendlier than ever. For so many people, we are the first thing they see before they get to work each day. We provide a positive, easy-going and fun environment with the best cup of coffee and breakfast around! And if you have such a good time that you can't wait to come back, then we'll see for lunch, too! Yeah, we do that!
Over the past 22 years, we have seen our fair share of changes. The important things have stayed the same. Our cafe is still owned and operated by the Scott family. While my mama took on a more behind the scenes roll of "family manager," I stepped in in 2009 to manage the dining room and retail. I have loved being back and have enjoyed every second of becoming reacquainted with the town through our loyal customers. You are the reason we are here, and we are grateful!
We thank you for 22 wonderful years, and look forward to sharing many more. If you have never eaten with us, please stop in and let us show you the unbeatable difference that a locally owned cafe can offer!
